The Economic Development Commission was originally referred to as the Development Commission. At a Special Town Meeting on May 19, 1958, a resolution was passed that the Town of Durham create a committee of five electors of the Town to be known as the "Durham Development Commission," and that the commission start to function June 1958. On October 26, 1964, at an adjourned annual town meeting an ordinance was enacted to establish a Development and Industrial Commission. The Commission's name was changed to the Durham Economic Development Commission by the legislature.
